On Sunday, August 25, Concordia University Chicago celebrated the installation of Dr. Russell P. Dawn as its twelfth president. The ecclesiastical rite took place as part of the University’s Service of Praise at the Opening of the 156th Academic Year. The event was attended by more than 500 faculty, staff, students, alumni, clergy of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and community members.
Presided over by Rev. Allan Buss, President of the Northern Illinois District of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and member of the University’s Board of Regents, Dr. Dawn’s installation represented formal recognition of his new position in the Church and with the University. The Rev. Dr. Matthew Harrison, President of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, served as the preacher for the service.
In addition to Dr. Dawn’s installation, rites of induction and installation were conducted for 15 new faculty and staff members. In recognition of those individuals, Dawn said, “Among God’s many gifts to this university community are the faithful and conscientious faculty and staff who perform their duties with diligence and concern for those who are in their charge and whom they serve.”
As is customary at many Christian colleges and universities, the rite of Installation represents recognition by the Church, whereas Inauguration represents recognition by the academic community. The academic Inaugural Convocation for Dr. Dawn will take place on Friday, October 25, at 10:30 a.m., in Geiseman Gymnasium on the University’s main campus.
