August 2017

In July, heavy downpours caused record flooding along the Des Plaines and Fox Rivers in Illinois. Families were evacuated from their homes as rivers kept rising, causing flooding and street closures.

Throughout the month, as soon as flood waters receded in Lake and McHenry Counties, Northbrook, Illinois-based Lutheran Church Charities responded to invitations for flood recovery assistance, showing the mercy and compassion of Jesus to those suffering and in need.

LCC President/CEO Tim Hetzner, LCC Director of Disaster Response Kathy O’Day, LCC staff member Jamie Miller and LCC volunteers worked closely with Pastor Brian Davies of Lord of Glory Lutheran Church in Grayslake and Pastor Ben Squires of Bethel Lutheran Church in Gurnee. Together with church volunteers, they  provided pump-out assistance in neighborhoods that were overtaken with flood waters.

LCC handed out financial assistance, flood buckets and quilts to flood-affected families overwhelmed by the destruction and expensive recovery that they will face. To learn more about disaster response Lutheran Church Charities carries out through and on behalf of LCMS Northern Illinois District congregations, and beyond the Illinois state borders as well, go to the Lutheran Church Charities website.
