Susan M. Volk was born on October 11, 1952, in Milwaukee, WI, on her father’s birthday. Two weeks later, she was baptized at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, where she attended school for ten years and where her father was the first principal. She attended Milwaukee Lutheran High School, Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, and Trenton State College, where she earned a Masters in Education degree.

She taught in Lutheran schools for 37 years, in Philadelphia, PA, and Oak Lawn, Chicago, Bensenville, and Hinsdale in Illinois. Following her mother’s passion, Sue focused on early childhood education. In Oak Lawn, she met her husband, William Volk. They were married on April 7, 1990. This marriage was blessed with two children: Chelsea and Julia.

Her favorite activities were in the church: being with family, singing, and playing the cello. One of her best memories was playing at the Orchestra Hall and performing as a trio with her mother on the piano, and her sister, Carol, on the violin.

Sue passed away peacefully at home on December 4, 2023.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Margaret Dobberfuhl, her brother-in-law, Robert Mueller, and great-nephew, Aiden Mueller.

She is survived by her beloved husband, William Volk; two daughters, Chelsea Wiederhold and husband, Troy, and Julia Volk and fiancé, Nathan Rehlinger; two grandsons, Levi and Travis Wiederhold; her husband’s children, Mark (Donna) Volk, Wayne Volk, and Susan E.
