Yearbooks, band uniforms, trophies and more will be available.
Yearbooks, band uniforms, trophies and more will be available in a scholarship fundraiser at the old Luther South campus at 83rd and Kedzie, in Chicago.

November 2016

All Luther South alumni and friends are invited to participate in a Memorabilia Scholarship Fundraiser the first two weekends in December. Trophies, yearbooks, sheet music, library books, band hats, band uniforms, choir robes and possibly other items of interest will be available. The school will be open from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, December 3, 2016, and again on Saturday, December 10, 2016. Plan to pay for items with cash or check and take them with you on that day. (Credit card service will not be available.)

The old Luther South facility is owned by the St. Louis-based Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF). The building is up for sale and the projection is that it will be demolished. LCEF wants to make good use of the items left inside. The Northern Illinois District (NID) of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and the Chicagoland Lutheran Educational Foundation (CLEF) are working together to distribute these items. Chicago elementary schools are now using Luther South desks, chairs, lockers, etc. The scholarship fundraiser is the next step in the process. The concept is that Luther South alumni and friends will make a donation to the CLEF Scholarship Fund in exchange for items received. Many thanks to LCEF for making these items available — for making a part of Luther South live on in Lutheran schools and in the homes of alumni.

Chicago Lutheran schools cannot operate unless they collect tuition, and many families cannot afford to pay full or even partial tuition. Donations to the scholarship fund make it possible for children to attend Lutheran schools who otherwise could not. Your donations will help keep Lutheran education alive and well, and help our schools share the Good News that God loves us, sent His Son to die for us, and empowers us to live lives of contribution.

Suggested minimum donations have been set. It is hoped that some will be able to donate larger amounts, and understood that circumstances will dictate that some donate less. Donation suggestions are state trophies $75, large trophies $50, small trophies $25, yearbooks $10, and other items, such as sheet music, band hats, band uniforms, choir robes, library books, etc., determined on an individual basis. Make checks payable to Chicagoland Lutheran Educational Foundation. Go to the main entry door off the parking lot. Either this door will be open or notice of entry point will be posted.

Since this project is and needs to be spread over two three-hour mornings, it is not a Luther South reunion, per se. However, it is a golden opportunity for you to connect with classmates and take what perhaps would be a “final stroll” through Luther South. You may wish to contact your Facebook Group and others to schedule a specific morning (December 3 or 10) and time to gather. Note that there are 25 Luther South Facebook groups.

IMPORTANT: THE FACILITY HAS NO ELECTRICITY OR WATER. WASHROOMS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. Closest washrooms are in neighboring fast food establishments. Plan accordingly!
