It may sound like low aspiration … 0.1k … that’s only a little more than a football field, a far cry from the Chicago Marathon just three weeks later. Or how about low endurance … run, walk, crawl? But, that’s not the point. With the popularity of runs where people pay an entry fee and then run their heart out, the PTL at St. John’s Lutheran School in Lansing, Illinois, is choosing instead to put their heart into the end goal — for God and country.

They are holding their second annual “For God & Country 0.1k Run, Walk or Crawl” on Saturday, September 16. It’s a community event that pairs up school kids and families of all ages with the Lansing American Legion. “Hence the run’s name—God and country,” said Tim Funchion of St. John and one of the run’s organizers.

Proceeds from last year’s run provided additional Chromebooks for St. John’s classrooms along with a cash donation to the Manteno Veterans Home. This VA facility serves up to 294 veterans requiring skilled care or having special needs.

This year’s run funds will be shared with Camp Quality of Illinois and Operation Combat Bikesaver in Cedar Lake, Indiana. “These are two great organizations with a mission of compassion,” said Funchion. “Camp Quality of Illinois assists children with cancer and Operation Combat Bikesaver works with veterans and first responders who have PTSD.”

Everyone is invited to come out to run, walk or crawl on behalf of caring for young and old and in between. Check-in for the event begins at 10:15 a.m. at Clock Tower Park, corner of Ridge Road and Grant Street in Lansing, Illinois. The opening prayer and calisthenics start at 11:15 and the run is at 11:45. A noon hot dog lunch will be sponsored by the American Legion Riders.

The entry fee is $20 if paid by August 18; $25 on August 19 and after. All entry fees received by August 18 will include a T-shirt and a 0.1k sticker.

Please return your form and fee in person or mail to St. John’s Lutheran Church/School office, 18100 Wentworth Ave., Lansing, IL 60438. (Parent signature required for runners under age 18.) Download registration form here.
