A prayer shawl ministry at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Matteson, Illinois, is in its fifth year and continues to be strong and touch hearts.

A tangible touch of the congregation’s prayers, love and support is given to recipients of prayer shawls, quilted and fleece prayer covers, and prayer squares. All are handmade by a team of about 30 volunteers.

Recipients include members of the congregation, their family and friends, the Franciscan Health Oncology Unit, Lullaby Nursery for newborns, Vitas Hospice, and Rich Township Senior Center, to name a few.

Close to 1,500 shawls and covers and countless prayer squares have been given out. Over 800 prayer squares also have been sent to troops overseas. Prayer shawls have been shipped to 23 states.

“There is no greater joy than the presentation of prayer shawls to people in need,” said Peggy Smutny, coordinator. “We consider all those willing to deliver and present shawls to be an active part of the ministry.”
