Family in Faith Lutheran Church, Glendale Heights: Meeting Neighbors Where They Are. Sharing Christ with Open Hands.
In Glendale Heights—a community shaped by diversity, migration, and economic need—Family in Faith Lutheran Church is discovering what it means to meet neighbors where they are and walk with them toward Christ. The congregation’s ministry is marked by open doors, deep compassion, and a growing trust that God is powerfully at work through simple acts of welcome.
At the center of that work is the congregation’s food pantry. In December alone, Family in Faith Lutheran
Church served 327 families—nearly 1,000 individuals. In January, close to 150 families were served each week, many receiving a full grocery cart of food that included fresh produce, frozen meat, dairy items, pantry staples, and even pet food when available. Guests come from across the globe, representing more than 20 countries, reflecting the rich diversity of the surrounding neighborhood. The pantry is open every Wednesday and Saturday, offering not only nourishment, but dignity and connection.
Each pantry day is also an opportunity for Gospel witness. Guests are welcomed with smiles and conversation, offered prayer, and invited into worship. Children receive Arch Books and families leave knowing they are seen and valued.
Through these relationships, lives are being changed. A woman from Laos attended church for the first time. A man baptized while incarcerated is now in new member classes. Others—formerly identifying as pagan, newly arrived immigrants, longtime local residents—are being drawn into the life of the congregation through its proclamation of the Gospel of Christ.
During Advent, the congregation distributed thousands of toys along with Bibles in English and Spanish, children’s Bibles, and Christmas books. Several families who received gifts have since begun attending worship, with multiple baptisms now scheduled.
Recognizing the needs of a majority-minority community—nearly 40 percent Spanish-speaking—Family in Faith Lutheran Church has begun translating worship into Spanish, acknowledging both the challenges and necessity of reaching neighbors in their heart language.
Beyond food and worship, the congregation is expanding holistic care. Family in Faith Lutheran Church will soon host Administer Justice, providing monthly pro bono legal services in conjunction with the pantry. Conversations are underway with healthcare leaders about hosting a medical clinic with counselors to serve as a satellite site for mental health care. The congregation is also exploring partnerships to reopen an early childhood center and preschool, while looking ahead to ESL Bible studies for Spanish-speaking neighbors.
Prayer remains foundational. A new prayer-blanket ministry surrounds the sick and hospitalized with Scripture and intercession. Weekly AA meetings provide support and hope. Alpha groups hosted in homes create space for honest questions and Gospel conversation.
Through baptisms, service, and everyday faithfulness, Family in Faith Lutheran Church is living out the Gospel beyond Sunday morning. Trusting the Holy Spirit’s work, the congregation is boldly praying that many more will come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior—drawn not by programs alone, but by grace, love, and the living presence of Christ among His people.
