Rev. John A. Shumate, 77, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 14, 2026. He was born on Tuesday, March 22, 1949, in
Grand Rapids, Michigan to the late John William and Dorothy Emma (Tetzlaff) Shumate. On August 16, 1974, in Norridge, Illinois, John married the love of his life, Loretta Wendt.
Pastor Shumate enjoyed the simple things in life like spending time with his family and grandchildren, rooting for the Detroit Lions and Chicago Cubs, fishing, and visiting with close friends that he made in his 50 years of ministry. Most of all, he felt blessed to serve a loving and faithful congregation.
John is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Loretta Shumate; his three children, Wendy (Chris) Shumate-Wisinski, Heidi (Tony) Gonzales, and Tim Shumate; four grandchildren, Myrium Shumate, Justin Gonzales, Jonah Wisinski, and Micah Wisinski; one brother, Jim (Nancy) Shumate; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Nagel and Karen (John) Fjellander; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026, from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, 680 W. Deerpath Road, Lake Forest, Illinois. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Fath with Rev. Jim Buckman officiating. A luncheon will follow at the church after the service from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. A private family burial will be held at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park in Zion, Illinois.
