Carl Flentge Schalk, age 91, of Melrose Park, died January 24, 2021.
Dr. Schalk was an elementary school teacher and director of music at Zion Lutheran Church and School in Wausau, WI, from 1952 to 1958, and a former director of music for the radio broadcast of The Lutheran Hour in St. Louis, MO from 1958 to 1965. He was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Music and a 2018 Spiritus Christi honoree at Concordia University Chicago, retiring in 1993. A global influence in church music, Dr. Schalk had continued to compose music, write articles and books, conduct research, and host webinars on worship and music from home.
He was the loving husband of the late Noel Schalk; father of Jan Westrick, Rebecca (Edward) Nagel, and Timothy (the Rev. Ingrid) Schalk. In addition he leaves behind grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
