In October, The LCMS Northern Illinois District hosted a gathering for wives and widows of pastors who have served or are currently serving in the District. The gathering provides recognition and support for these women and the important role they play in the life of the Church.

The gathering was held virtually over video conference call, with hour-long fellowship sessions each day over the course of a week. One of the blessings of meeting virtually was greater ease of attendance. The population density gradient across the District can make finding a convenient location to hold events difficult, but the virtual meeting was easy to attend for all women, regardless of location.

The sessions included time for fun, learning, and meditation on the Scriptures. Several women spearheaded planning the event: Theresa Heine, Marguerita Whitby, Martha Moeller, and Kristi Heinz. They made sure that the distance did not put a damper on the experience–each participant received an activity package with gifts and trinkets that would be used during the virtual gatherings.

Bingo! The women played on Monday and Tuesday.

Karen Lippert, speaker for Women’s Leadership Institute of Concordia University Wisconsin, led the ladies through a Bible study on the theme of hope. Readings from Lamentations and Psalms were discussed and meditated on. The theme of the gathering was “Filled with Living Hope,” based on the Northern Illinois District’s mission statement: “Filled with living hope in Christ, confessing, praising, advancing His kingdom,” and Mrs. Lippert’s study magnified the theme of hope.

Dr. Bev Yahnke spoke to the women about the challenge of remaining emotionally resilient in the face of life’s trials. She offered the women perspectives and tips on managing stress and expectations, navigating the obstacles of the coronavirus pandemic, and remaining focused on Christ through everything. Her vibrant and compassionate presentation provided women the space to reflect on their lives, and Dr. Yahnke offered them the opportunity to share their questions and thoughts.

NID President Allan Buss and Marie Buss shared their experience as husband and wife raising a family and working in the Church. With humility and good humor, they encouraged the women and thanked them for their partnership in the life of the Church. “Our role is a unique one as wives—with our husbands’ positions—that most women don’t have. We have a unique role… that God chose us to do,” said Marie Buss. Together they reminisced about the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic, sharing their hearts and laughing with one another.

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:24-25
